Like so many other churches, this year we used Group’s “Easy VBS” option, Kingdom Rock, for our Vacation Bible School program. For us, this summer had a lot riding on it. We hadn’t used a traditional “VBS” approach in more than 6 or 7 years. We’d tried family VBS and last year we basically put our VBS program during the Sunday morning hours. Sure, these programs had their advantages, but in the end they didn’t capture much energy or bring many new faces to our church, so this year we decided to stop trying to re-invent the summer wheel. In the end, I’m glad we did.
The first thing we loved about using Kingdom Rock is that the name “Easy VBS” fits. VBS is always crazy, with a million details to nail down. However, the folks at Group did a great job streamlining it as much as possible. Specifically, their online tool, VBS Pro was amazing. VBS Pro allowed us to have a lot of parents sign up online, it provided shopping lists and to-do lists, and it made it easy to point our families to a place to get information online. Beyond VBS Pro, we loved how easy Group made it to create a daily slideshow, and our kids had a blast with the imagination station activities. All of these endeavors can be really tricky, so it was cool to see them pulled off with such ease!
Another thing we loved was how everything tied together. Not only did our snacks tie in to the theme, so did the games, the crafts and even the daily Bible Buddies. It was awesome to see how our kids got to be reminded of the theme and lesson every day in a variety of ways.
Finally, we actually liked the preschool curriculum! It so often feels like preschool curriculum is a add-on, but our preschool group really loved their program, and our leaders felt like a lot of thought and effort went into it.
The only drawback about using Group’s easy VBS is that several other churches in our town use it as well, meaning we have a group of kids who had already done the VBS by the time we started. In the end, however, it was so fun that it didn’t really matter. We were thankful that everything had been written well and tied together so nicely. If you find yourself looking for a solid, fun, well-written VBS curriculum, definitely give Group’s Easy VBS option a try. You’ll like it just like we did!
